Good preparation makes a wax cleaner, more comfortable and longer-lasting — but it is simpler than most guides make it sound. At our Harlesden studio, José talks every first-timer through this in person, so treat this page as the short version to read before you arrive.
Hair length: the one thing that actually matters
The wax needs roughly one centimetre of growth to grip properly — about two to three weeks after your last shave. Shorter than that and the wax cannot pick the hair up cleanly; much longer is fine. You do not need to trim beforehand. Men often take it too short at home, so José trims to the correct working length at the start of the appointment if needed. If you have shaved recently and are unsure whether you have enough growth, message before you book rather than turning up too short.
The day of your appointment
- Shower beforehand and arrive clean. Freshly washed skin is more comfortable to work on and lowers the risk of irritation afterwards.
- Skip oils, lotions and fragranced products on the area you are having waxed. Oily or heavily moisturised skin stops the wax gripping properly.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Tight fabric rubbing on freshly waxed skin is one of the most common causes of same-day irritation, especially after intimate or leg waxing.
- Do not arrive straight from the gym. Come showered and relaxed — tension makes waxing feel worse than it is.
What to avoid before waxing
Two things to leave alone in the days before your appointment. First, skip the numbing creams sold online: most contain too little active ingredient to do much through skin in the time available, and their oily bases can stop the wax adhering. Second, avoid sunbeds and heavy sun exposure on the area for 24 to 48 hours beforehand — waxing freshly sun-exposed or burnt skin is uncomfortable and best avoided.
If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition
Hot wax is gentler on sensitive skin than strip wax because it grips the hair rather than the skin, which is why we use Hive of Beauty hot wax for intimate work. If you have a skin condition, are on any medication that affects the skin (such as retinoids or acne treatments), or have had a reaction to waxing before, mention it when you book so José can advise before your appointment. With more than seven years waxing men, José has worked with many different skin types, and it is always better to raise something beforehand than to discover it on the day.
A note for your first appointment
If it is your first wax, you do not need to prepare any differently — just arrive with the right growth and let José know it is your first time. He will explain each step before it happens, check how you are as the treatment goes, and keep the pace comfortable. Nerves are normal and expected; nothing about a first appointment is treated as unusual.
Between appointments
Once your skin has settled — from about 48 hours after a wax — gentle exfoliation two or three times a week helps prevent ingrown hairs, and a simple, unfragranced moisturiser keeps the skin in good condition. Regular appointments every four to six weeks keep regrowth on a predictable cycle, and over time the regrowth tends to come back finer.
Ready to book?
That is genuinely all the preparation needed — clean skin, enough growth, and loose clothing to travel home in.
